To install a font in windows:
Once opening the zip file containing the font - extract the font into the following folder:
C:/WINDOWS/FONTS
* Sometimes you may have to open the aforementioned folder for the font to be properly installed. This will also let you use the font in an open application such as Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop
To install a font on Mac OS:
Some fonts will not work on a mac. If the font's filetype is .ttf (TrueType) then you will be able to use the font.
Sometimes windows will not install a font automatically and you will have to open the default font folder (C:\WINDOWS\FONTS) to make sure the font was installed properly.
Users will only be able to see the font if they themselves also have the font installed on their system. There are ways around this. You may use php to generate a image including the font so it may be viewable by viewers. Here is an article explaining this process.

While most of the fonts are free, there are some on this site that are classified as: Shareware, Demo, etc. To make sure you are using a font within its restrictions refer to the readme text's in the font zip file.
Depends on how much memory your system has. Regardless, more fonts will slow down your system so it is good practice to only have fonts installed that will regularly use. Keep the rest in a seperate folder until you would care to use them again.
